Abstract : Initial transmission measurements made with helium, at electron energies high enough to allow rapid work, confirm expectations of the capability of the spectrometer to measure cross sections. A new coaxial-line geometry for the hydrogen-spark pulsed light source has been adopted which will operate at a much higher repetition frequency than the mica-capacitor source it replaces. Most of the experimental work during the quarter has consisted of driftbiasing measurements, in which electron time-offlight spectra taken at various electrode potentials are compared in order to establish proper settings for electrode contact potential compensation and to establish a technique in which the emission and transmission spectra can be determined simultaneously with gas samples present.
