Abstract : An approximate solution is presented for the ablation of a hollow cylinder whose inner surface is subjected to an axisymmetric heat source and whose outer surface is insulated. The products of melting or sublimation are assumed to be immediately removed upon formation. The analysis considers two distinct ablation problems. The first is concerned with a hollow cylinder of high-conductivity material, and the second considers a hollow cylinder of a lowconductivity material. In the case of the highconductivity material, the spatial variation of temperature in the unablated solid is assumed to be a second-order polynomial; for the lowconductivity material, an exponential temperature profile is assumed. In both cases a heat balance integral technique, which satisfies the heat conduction equation on the average, is used to obtain the ablation time history. The solutions are in the form of second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations in the position of the ablating surface. (Author)
