Abstract : Intravenous injections of anthrax toxin consistently produce pulmonary edema, cyanosis, and death in Fischer 344 rats. A light and electron microscopic study of the lungs of rats sacrificed serially after injections of toxin revealed diffuse pulmonary edema with pronounced capillary endothelial cell changes followed by widespread thrombosis of pulmonary capillaries.
