Abstract : Deformation at subzero temperatures significantly increases the strength of 300 series, stainlesssteel alloys; Type 301 stainless steel exhibits the greatest response of any commercial alloy. High strength, cryogenically-formed, stainlessstell sheet can be produced, but welding reduces its strength. A process has been developed by which a welded preform is expanded at cryogenic temperatures to final size by internal pressurization. This technique has been used to produce pressure vessels of prototype and actual rocket motor case configurations. (Author)
