Abstract : This report describes work on an experimental program which is designed to follow in detail the recrystallization process from the earliest stages onwards. The first material to be studied is zinc, whose behavior is typical of hexagonal metals. Experiments are being carried out in which zinc bicrystals of closely controlled orientation can be deformed by a known set of forces, at predetermined strain rates and temperatures. In particular the authors discuss production of zinc bicrystals of controlled orientation and the construction of apparatus designed to deform the bicrystals by shearing parallel to their grain boundaries. A trial deformation run with a bicrystal specimen indicated that the deformation machine and its associated control and recording apparatus work satisfactorily except for the load recording system. This latter part contains semiconductor strain gauges which, in their present arrangement, have proved to be too sensitive to temperature variations. Work to rectify this is now being carried out. Techniques for optical and electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction examination of the structure of bicrystals have been developed. Examples of this foil electron-microscopy of zinc, and of the x-ray beam microscopy are also presented in this report. (Author)
