Abstract : The theory of a peristaltic magnetofluid dynamic compressor was developed. To investigate and confirm the results of this development an experimental compressor has been designed and constructed. Two concentric circular annuli filled respectively with NaK and oil are separated by a flexible rubber diaphragm. Coils fed from a polyphase source generate a traveling electromagnetic field to induce both radial and axial body forces in the conducting liquid. The former act to pinch and trap packets of the nonconducting liquid, the latter act to propel these trapped packets. The design and construction of the apparatus as well as preliminary observations of the system operation are described. (Author)
