Abstract : The purpose of this paper is to describe the problems associated with collecting, reducing, and analyzing data generated during a field exercise for the purpose of evaluating performance. A brief introduction shows the usefulness of objective evaluation of performance during field exercises and presents some background material pertinent to this paper. A general procedure for planning and executing a field exercise for evaluation purposes is presented and methods of data collection are discussed in terms of training human data collectors, designing data forms, and editing collected data. The processing of collected data is discussed in terms of manual versus machine processing, computer programming, and the use of computers by exercise planners. A brief description of the applicability of statistical analysis to field exercises is presented in broad terms. A general procedure for obtaining statistical inferences is determined. Finally, general conclusions are presented. (Author)
