Abstract : The photoparametric diode is a device which combines the detection of modulated irradiation with integral parametric amplification of the modulating signal. A detailed analysis of the device operation predicts a low-noise figure for the parametric amplifier portion of the photoparametric operation. This detailed analysis is included. The low-noise behavior has been verified. One of the conclusions of this analysis is that the diode should be a good photodiode for the real of hypothetical case in which it is operated non-parametrically. Considerable attention has been paid to the various aspects of device fabrication, packaging, and theory of the generalized microwave photodiode. Fabrication, packaging, and the theoretical design aspects are covered. (Author)
