Abstract : A list is presented covering those shipboard machines which are logical candidates for gas bearing applications. The method used in making the selection is shown and explained. This consists of using one matrix to determine the adaptability of a process fluid lubricated bearing to various classes of machinery, and another to determine the benefits to be gained by using these bearings. These evaluations are then weighed to determine suitable candidate machines. In addition, a machine is selected for a design study in Part IV.
