Abstract : The photoelastic properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were subjected to preliminary investigation several years ago. Some of these measurements were repeated and extended during the past year. These measurements confirm previous observations and demonstrate the contribution of both distortional and orientational contributions to the birefringence. They also indicate the possibility of dichroism studies on partly decomposed PVC which will be described in a future report. Measurements of dynamic birefringence were also conducted indicating a negative strain-optical coefficient at room temperature consistent with a dominant distortional contribution.
