Abstract : Two instrument bearing arrays were supported by balloons on the Double Tracks event. One large balloon supported a 750-foot high by 1,500-foot wide array at 2,500 feet downwind from ground zero, and 8 small evenly spaced balloons supported instruments up to 1,000 feet high over a 7,500foot wide area at 13,000 feet downwind from ground zero. Air samplers, cascade impactors, and sticky cylinders were supported by the arrays. The balloons used for all arrays were aerodynamically shaped with volumes of 5,000, 6,150, 145,000 and 185,000 cubic feet. Five of the large balloons were damaged beyond repair, as were 14 of the smaller, UK-supplied balloons, by the strong and gusty winds that occurred during the months of April and May. All of the downwind arrays were tethered on vehicles so the arrays could be moved as the wind shifted to place them directly downwind of ground zero. (Author)
