Abstract : This report compares detailed measurements of the performance of krypton-filled and argon-filled 6.2-volt marine signal lamps of the 0.46-ampere and 0.70-ampere sizes. Measurements included: current drain, luminous intensity, and color temperature as functions of applied voltage; current drain and luminous intensity as functions of time for flashing operation at rated voltage; current drain and luminous emittance as functions of time in operation at rated voltage; Lamplife at rated voltage. The report concludes that krypton-filled lamps are significantly superior to argon-filled lamps of corresponding size in terms of luminous emittance and luminous efficiency, and only slightly inferior in terms of lamplife.
