Abstract : The mathematical treatment of the motion of a system consisting of an oscillating hollow cylinder containing a liquid is examined. It is shown that this leads to a cubic equation in n to the one-half power of a form suitable for an absolute calculation method. The conditions under which this reduces to the forms of the various known empirical and semi-empirical equations for calculating viscosity from the logarithmic decrement of the amplitudes are examined, and the factors for the design of an apparatus suitable for unambiguous results are discussed.
