Abstract : This study investigated the feasibility and desirability of using a head-worn film strip viewer in conjunction with an auditory system to present programmed audio-visual guidance to persons performing maintenance, assembly or other sequential tasks. A head-worn device was used in evaluating various display and environmental parameters, and its utility as a performance aid was compared with that of a commercial audiovisual device whose effectiveness is well established. In summary, the head-worn film viewer was found to be: (1) usable under a wide range of viewing conditions, (2) equal, as a performance aid, to an audio-visual device whose effectiveness is well established, and (3) preferred by more of the experimental users than were alternative performance aids. These facts, plus the greater mobility afforded the user and the ability to operate in narrowly confined work spaces, indicate a promising future for headworn audio-visual devices. (Author)
