Abstract : In this study of prototype solid-state devices containing organic materials, and in the determination of the electronic properties of these organic compounds, four projects are reported: Project I was an effort to obtain a thin-film transistor using the high-mobility organic semiconductor copper phthalocyanine. Project II carried the study of organic photoconductors to polymers doped with aromatic hydrocarbons. The doping appeared to have no effect on photoconductors. Project III concerned higher-chargemobility compounds. Ag(2+) phthalocyanine was found to be physically intractable. Cobalt phthalocyanine showed promise as a high-mobility material. Under Project IV we measured the electro-optic coefficient of hexamine by means of optical second-harmonic generation. The value obtained by this method, which is less sensitive to crystal perfection than that obtained through measurement of the Pockel's effect, is in agreement with our previous theory. (Author)
