Abstract : Twenty-three metal chelate compounds were prepared, purified and tested as fuel cell catalysts for hydrogen, methanol, hydrazine, propane, acetate and formate fuel cell anodes. A gas electrode of a Teflon matrix with carbon or metal powder was developed. This electrode has excellent mass transport properties and is being used to evaluate chelate catalysts. With this structure, chromium and palladium phthalocyanines showed good hydrogen electrode activity when the chelate was wet-mixed with carbon. Addition of adsorbing agents (silica and squalene) further improved performance. (Author)
