Abstract : This research deals with low temperature investigations of elastomeric polymers, with particular emphasis on their use as seals at cryogenic temperatures. The present report starts with a study of correlations between physical properties and cryogenic seal performance based on work previously reported. Best performing elastomers and most significant physical properties are summarized. Seal and force decay measurements were completed. A constant force experiment was designed to investigate methods and materials for reduction of flange loads. A technique for placing a thin layer of indium between the elastomer and the flange was developed. This elastomer-indium seal induces the required flange load by a factor of three, and in addition makes a more reliable seal than the plain elastomer. Appendices include a state of the art review of low temperature static seals and a paper on the design of elastomeric seals for cryogenic temperatures. (Author)
