Abstract : A spark-source mass-spectrographic analytical procedure suitable for the determination of trace impurity elements in high-purity beryllium has been developed. The mass-spectrographicdevelopment work included (1) studies on the effectiveness of several sample cleaning techniques and sample 'bake' treatments prior to the analysis; (2) the observation of residual gases given off during the bake and sample excitation cycles; (3) efforts to prepare low oxygen standards by use of 17O additions to beryllium; (4) investigations on data readout procedures; and (5) application of the developed procedures to beryllium materials on which purity information was available. An emission-spectrographic method capable of determining many metallic impurity elements at or near the 1 part per million concentration level has been developed, and a combustion-conductometric method has been developed for the determination of carbon in the range of 1 to 10 parts per million with a blank variance of =1 microgram in respect to the flux. Additional development efforts were directed toward the determination of carbon by combustion methods. (Author)
