Abstract : Investigations of shelf life and low temperature performance consisted principally of two shelf and two experimental design programs. Investigations of anode pitting and slow voltage recovery of the cell comprising seven screening programs, involving various modifications and combinations of cell components, were undertaken. Cleaning of the anode after forming with Dow 21 pickle minimized the pitting. The plastic cell closure has markedly improved the shelf life of the Balaguer 'D' size cell. Employing a seamless steel jacket in place of a seam steel jacket reduced the radial expansion during cell discharge.
