Abstract : This report concerns a program to design a shipboard antenna system using a grounded tower and short tuned whips to supply several receiving circuits in the 2 to 8 Mc/s frequency range, use the degree of atmospheric noise level at the operating frequencies to determine the allowable loss in antenna efficiency, stress small physical size for the antenna system consistent with this allowable loss and construct such a system to check operating performance of the design. A full-scale tower and four rf tuners and whips were built and their electrical performance tested. The feasibility of simultaneous operation of 12 tuned whips on a single 25-foot grounded tower was demonstrated. Tower efficiency, when 5 percent frequency separation between tuners was maintained, was within =3 dB of the design goal between 2.4 and 8 Mc/s. Controlled efficiency of the system resulted in greater isolation from transmitting antennas with corresponding increased receiver protection. Greater rejection of interfering signals was provided. Individual operation of the whiptuners mounted on a ship's superstructure is possible, but performance may be degraded over some of the frequency range. (Author)
