Abstract : The objective of the experiment was to determine the feasibility of utilizing spectroscopic analysis to predict the fallout hazard from surface bursts of nuclear devices. Two elementary-type spectroscopes were connected to 35-mm movie cameras and attempts were made to obtain spectra from two tactical type nuclear devices, Shots Little Feller I and II of Operation Sun Beam. Emission and absorption spectra were obtained from the Little Feller I event. On the basis of the rudimentary data obtained, it is suggested that a refinement of the technique may permit prediction of local fallout. No definitive answer is possible as to the discrimination between air bursts and surface bursts inasmuch as only surface bursts were available for instrumentation. (Author)
