Abstract : The 5-in UHR tube uses a two-spiral optical system for focus and collimation. At 18KV, it puts an average of 4muA through a spot of 1/3 mil. This resolution is fully preserved within a 4-in screen diameter by three dynamic corrections: one for focus and two for astigmatism. An analog computer derives these signals from deflection, using a new type of product-generator called the Roving-Square Tube (RST). Spotsize and shape are measured objectively by a new type of spot-dissector, using crossed slits and circular sweep. Errors from phosphor decay are eliminated by subcarrier modulation at 10 megacycles. Twelve ultra-high-resolution (UHR) tubes, plus the magnetic components required to operate them, were constructed.
