Abstract : A typical mass spectral record consists of a series of pulses, the amplitude of each pulserepresenting the abundance of the corresponding mass number. Because it is possible fo several sucessive pulses to overlap, it is sometimes impossible, by visual inspection of the data, to determine the inividual amplitudes of the pulses. In this report it is proposed that the overlapping peaks be resolved by the application of standard least-squares estimation techniques. The estimation equations are derived as they apply to this problem, and examples of the technique appied to actual mass-specrometer data indicate that the method is feasible and effective. The main concern of this report is the evaluaton of te perforance of the proposed resolution procedure. Expressions for the noise power in the estimate as a function of measuremnnos,puls shape, and pulse spacing are derivd. In the case of an infinite number foverlapping puses, the error xpression takes the form of a contour integral which can be evaluated analytically for various operating configurations. The expression has been evaluated for several representative case, and the results pesentd in graphical form. (Author)
