Abstract : This report describes the first three months of work on an investigation of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as a solid lubricant. The objective, scope, and approach of the program are discussed. Arrangements for obtaining a supply of MoS2 powder of documented composition and particle size distribution have been completed. Preliminary experiments on forming pressurized compacts of MoS2 without the benefit of a binder have been made and some of their pertinent properties measured. A new compacting die has been designed, and the design of the apparatus for conducting measurements on compressive, tensile, and shear strengths and cohesion, adhesion, and friction coefficients is under way.
