Abstract : Investigations of the relationship between monomeric structure and the photographic speed of coated layers containing mono and polyfunctional monomers have been continued in the quest for photopolymerizable systems of high speeds. New monomers such as N-methyl diacrylamide, Nbutyl diacrylamide, and several mono-acrylated amino acids, such as N-acrylyl glycine, were synthesized for this purpose. N-methyl diacrylamide and N-butyl diacrylamide exhibited higher photographic speed than N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide, another bifunctional monomer. Acrylated amino acids were found to be faster than acrylamide, but generally exhibited a photographic speed less than that of N-acrylyl pyrrolidone or its homologs. The addition of oxygen scavengers such as N-phenylglycine and N-phenyliminodiacetic acid to photopolymerizable compositions containing triacrylformal or diacrylamide produced an increase in photographic speed. Compositions containing N-acrylyl pyrrolidone or N-acrylyl caprolactam, however, exhibited either no change or a decrease in speed in the presence of these additives. (Author)
