Abstract : Preliminary estimates are obtained of the testsection characteristics in a high-enthalpy, lowdensity wind tunnel. The initial stagnation conditions are assumed to be a temperature of 900 R and atmospheric pressure; the steady, onedimensional, inviscid, adiabatic expansion is terminated at 0.00001 atmosphere. Air is used as the working medium. The computations are performed for both equilibrium and frozen flow processes, thus enabling a physical appreciation for the comparative behavior of the two extremes which serve as upper and lower limits on any nonequilibrium behavior. The variables that are evaluated include the significant physical, thermodynamic, and transport properties, in addition to some of the more important dimensionless aerodynamic similarity parameters, all of which are presented graphically as a function of nozzle static pressure. It is demonstrated that the test-section characteristics depend to a considerable degree on the governing flow process. (Author)
