Abstract : The attenuation of a plane shock wave by an overtaking rarefaction has been studied using a rotating-mirror streak camera to obtain a shock trajectory resulting from the impact of a thin striker. Experimental data are presented for shocks in 1100F aluminum and the data are compared with results obtained from two sets of calculations. The shock attenuation is in excellent agreement with calculations based on linear characteristics along which (u + c) is constant. The attenuation is measurably less than that calculated from Fowles' equations, which neglect entropy changes at the shock front.
