Abstract : A study was performed to investigate the effects of shield-splitting in spacecraft systems utilizing Nuclear Auxiliary Power (NAP). The objective of the study was to determine whether the effectiveness of shielding materials placed between the radiation source and payload could be increased by dividing the shield into two or more separated segments. Sufficient increase in shield effectiveness would permit the use of less material, thereby reducing the system weight. Results for the two materials considered, LiH and Be, indicated that there was no appreciable increase in the effectiveness of the LiH shield, but for the nonhydrogenous Be shield some increase in effectiveness was possible.
