Abstract : The object of this program is to develop and evaluate point contact and tunnel diodes for use as mixers at 3.2 millimeters. Insertion loss and VSWR data are presented on a mica window for the integral waveguide-diode mount. Families of curves on conversion loss versus forward bias and LO power are presented for three sealed mixers utilizing the mica window. The problem of a poor IF VSWR is considered and still must be resolved. Data on the video detection characteristics of the sealed diodes are presented. Dual trace scope presentations are employed as a means of comparing the diodes' electrical performance versus life time. Finally, crystal noise ratio measurements are presented which result in establishing an optimum intermediate frequency to use. (Author)
