Abstract : Measurements are given of the properties of 20 glasses selected from the proprietary composition field As-S-Se-Te. The primary selection criteria were softening temperature in excess of 100 C, good transmittance in the 2 to 5 and/or 8 to 14 micron atmospheric windows, and the widest possible range of index of refraction and dispersion characteristics. Also included is a study of the long wavelength absorption characteristics of As-Se-Te glasses and the effects of composition, formulation procedure and impurities on the absorption of these glasses. An investigation was carried out of the effects of combined high pressures and temperatures on the density, refractive index and IR transmission of representative compositions with the objective to achieve an improved understanding of the fundamental structure of chalcogenide glasses.
