Abstract : Numerous examples of alpha-deuterium isotope effects are known in which closely related reactions may give either normal or inverse or even a negligible isotope effect. This statement may be supported by reference to solvolytic displacement of halides and sulphonates from methyl, ethyl and isopropyl where the common nucleophile is water. By contrast, Leffek showed that displacement of tosylate ion from methyl gave a normal isotope effect, while McLean and Leffek found that amines and methyl iodide gave an inverse effect. Other examples could also be cited to emphasise the dange of simple explanations and to emphasise the need for a broader experimental base from which to construct generalisations. (Author)
