Abstract : Investigation of radio frequency interference (RFI) at orbital altitudes was initiated because of the lack of information and effort essential for future reliable communications in space. Higher and higher transmitting powers and more crowded frequency bands are responsible for ever-increasing RFI problems that demand solution. The broad objectives of this program ara m are to study the RFI problem and to investigate the design and monitoring instruments suitable for making in-space measurements of the electromagnetic environment. For these purposes, laboratory development of a compact, lightweight receiving system in the 200 to 1000 Mc band has been initiated. The receiving system is to consist of an antenna array, a bank of interdigital bandpass filters, and 16 crystal video receivers. The results of tests on breadboard and prototype circuits have demonstrated the feasibility of this instrumentation concept. Flight-qualified hardware will be available by the end of 1964. (Author)
