Abstract : This report discusses the over-all objective of improving equipment for hemodialysis; two experimental dialyzer designs have been further developed. A semiautomatic technique for fabricating the Accordion model using paper tape gaskets has been conceived and partially developed. This constitutes a significant step toward economic production of a disposable unit designed specifically for military application. A new prototype of the Disc-Cone design has been built and partially tested. It employs a modified internal manifolding system which permits the use of a variable number of stacked parallel units. These features will be employed in a clinical model currently under construction. The capacity of the atraumatic 3-B blood pump has been increased to 4 liters per minute for use in cardiac by-pass systems. Electrohemodialysis has been shown to be unsafe for clinical application because of excessive destruction of erythrocytes due to intracellular potassium loss in exchange for sodium. (Author)
