Abstract : From an equation for the motion of an ellipsoid, suspended in a flowing viscous fluid with a simultaneously applied electric field, the rate of change in orientation of the polar axis of a spheroid in couette flow is obtained; if the electric field is parallel or perpendicular to the fluid vorticity vector, ultimately the spheroid rotates with its polar axis always parallel or perpendicular to it. Orientations, periods of rotation, and angles of equilibrium of discs have been observed experimentally in a Couette apparatus with the electric field normal to the planes of shear, and compared with the theoretical values. The theory can be modified so that particles of more general shape may be treated. Its importance to theories of streaming birefringence and viscosity of colloidal systems is pointed out. (Author)
