Abstract : The amplification of microwave phonons in germanium has been observed. Gains as large as 20 db at 9 Gc/sec have been observed. This type of amplifier is the first for which substantial gains have been reported at such high frequencies. The deformation potential interaction is responsible for transferring energy from the electronic current to the hypersonic wave. Because of the multivalley nature of the conduction bands of germanium, space charge repulsion is not as effective in debunching the electrons (and hence in reducing their interaction with the hypersonic wave) as it is for materials having a piezoelectric interaction.
