Abstract : This study simulates the behavior of a simple soil system through the study of the deformations occurring in a planar array of elastic spheres when this array is subjected to the stresses commonly applied to a soil sample in laboratory tests. Solution of the problem of sphere deformation under varying normal and tangential forces was accomplished for the cases of increasing vertical load on the specimen, unloading from some maximum conditions, and reloading from the minimum unloading condition. After the applicable mathematical relationships were derived, they were applied to two common loading cases encountered in laboratory tests on soils. The two loading conditions considered in the study were programmed into the FORTRAN II programming language for machine calculation on the IBM 1620 Data Processing System. The programs and the results of nine typical examples are presented. (Author)
