Abstract : Two separate laboratory investigations were conducted (1) to examine further the capabilities of certain selected soil additives, indicated to have potential in a previous study, to waterproof several soils ranging from a silt to a plastic, heavy clay; and (2) to make preliminary evaluations of the effectiveness and potential of a number of previously untested formulations in satisfying requirements for soil waterproofers for military purposes. In the extended investigation of selected materials, both an unmodified and a chemically modified kerosene-cutback asphalt (MC-O), a silicone salt, aniline-furfural, a fatty quaternary salt, and a commercial road oil were employed as treatments for five soil types. The water-resistance characteristics of compacted treated specimens were examined by means of a capillary-rise wetting test conducted through four cycles of alternate drying and wetting. The water-resistance capability of treated soil specimens of a lean and a heavy clay was determined through only a single cycle of drying and wetting. (Author)
