Abstract : The deformation characteristics of high purity lead and gold single crystals were studies over the temperature range of 77 K to 300 K by incremental loading creep tests in shear and strain-rate-change tests in tension. The data for lead indicate that above 128 K the change of the structure with strain is temperature dependent and at 148 K a change occurs in the prominent mechanism of the deformation kinetics. The data for gold show that a single thermally activated process is rate controlling over this temperature raynge from O shear strain and well into Stage II deformation where the tests were terminated. Calculations are presented on the interaction a dn intersection of dislocations considered in terms of the macroscopic aspects of crystalline flow in the f.c.c. lattice. (Author)
