Abstract : Forty-nine targets of various metallic materials and of various configurations were examined to determine the effects of hypervelocity impact by aluminum projectiles on the targets. Targets were examined visually. Dimensions of perforations and craters made by projectiles of known mass and velocity were measured. Specimens from damaged areas were mounted, polished and examined microscopically. The effects of hypervelocity impact were found to be confined to a narrow region around impact areas. The results of the target examinations are presented in this report. A consideration of new and novel approaches to the analysis of the effects of hypervelocity impact on targets was made. The results of this work are discussed.
