Abstract : There is a need for a system that would permit researchers in the military field to compare and correlate such widely variant factors as combat organization, materiel performance, environmental condition, and success of mission. It seemed desirable so to organize these data that a correlation between characteristics of military operational experience and of operational environments could be explored. A coding handbook that combines the coding systems used in descriptions of materiel performance, historical records of military operations, and descriptions of environmental conditions has been formulated. To explore the military meanings of the characteristics of places it seems essential to begin with the formulation of just such a complex matrix as is presented here. A conceptual skeleton of this kind is needed as an aid to the organization of a wide range of historical experiences and experimental results. It is needed as an aid or tool in the exploration of military- environmental relations and the testing of conceptual models for prediction. This coding handbook is presented as an aid in the identification and correlation of elements and factors that are of importance in the study of military environments and military operations; it shows how they can be numerically identified. The characteristics of the storage and retrieval system or systems that might be used in the employment of this system are outside the scope of this paper.
