Abstract : This report describes objectives, instrumentation, analysis techniques, conclusions, and recommendations resulting from four field seasons of basic research field investigations of cloud physics, cloud dynamics, and cloud electrification at Flagstaff, Arizona. The natural outdoor laboratory for natural and seeded clouds was instrumented by use of several aircraft thoroughly equipped for cloud physics measurements, two radars for monitoring precipitation and tracking the aircraft, and a ground photographic network. Results include: The instrumented outdoor laboratory technique was developed to a satisfactory stage and cloud seeding proved useful as a research tool. A persistent convective wake and associated precipitation was found downwind of the isolated peaks, and necessary conditions for the formation of the phenomena were determined. Cloud cross sections were observed by systematic aircraft traverses, and showed continuity consistent with the starting plume concept. Radiosonde records were analyzed for the height differences which the heat of fusion from cloud seeding could cause, and it was found that conditions often permitted differences exceeding 5000 ft.
