Abstract : Observations on the gyrofrequency splitting of the extraordinary mode of the radio wave have been made at Armidale (lat. 30 degrees 32 minutes S and long. 151 degrees 38 minutes E) using a Cossor ionosonde and a high gain array of 40 dipoles. The sensitivity of the receiving system is high and echoes with reflection coefficient as low as 7 nepers have been recorded. A model night time n(h) profile is derived from the observed h'(f) curves. The group refractive indices and the absorption coefficients have been computed from the magneto-ionic theory and used to calculate the group retardation and absorption suffered by the X-mode of the radio wave near the gyrofrequency for the model n(h) profile. These are compared with the observed h'(f) curves and the agreement seems to be good. It is concluded that the simple theory of Appleton, Farmer and Ratcliffe (1938) explains satisfactorily the results of observations of group retardation and absorption of the X-mode reflections below the gyrofrequency.
