Abstract : The effect of radiation on the canine kindey was studied following a single dose of 2,500 r to the lower pole of the exteriorized kidney. After a latent period of 4 weeks the irradiated area showed peritubular congestion and hemorrage, as well as tubular atropy and degeneration, followed by the progressive interstitial fibrosis and, ultimately, by scarring. The experimental technique employed permitted the conclusion that the observed changes were attributable solely to the effects of irradiation and were not caused by other possible factors such as pyelonephritis, vascular disease, hypertension, or trauma.
