Abstract : A great variety of techniques are available for the sorting of materials. Some of these techniques have been extensively developed for other purposes, but can be adopted for sorting purposes with relatively small amounts of research and development effort. This is particularly true of eddy-current and ultrasonic methods where much equipment is readily available. More straightforward methods involving more convenient equipment, such as dial-reading portable hardness testers, can be quickly adopted for appropriate situations. Older shop methods such as spark testing require up dating to extend their usage to new materials. No single source of literature exists that reviews critically, and describes extensively, what information exists in the field of sorting. An authoritative review would be welcome. (Author)
