Abstract : This study was undertaken to determine the effect of the containment vessel (including the nuclear reactor), which is a large concentrated mass, on the vibratory characteristics of NS SAVANNAH. The vertical vibration calculations for the containment vessel when rigidly attached and when spring attached to the hull are compared. From this comparison the conclusion is drawn that considering the containment vessel as attached to the hull with a spring constant equal to that of the mounting presently installed on the ship has little appreciable effect on the vibratory characteristics of SAVANNAH at low frequencies. Further calculations on the network analyzer using mountings with spring constants lower than the spring constant of the mounting presently installed on the ship indicate that a large mass such as the containment vessel can have considerable effect on the lower modes of vibration. A recommendation is made that such a network analyzer study be conducted during the design stage of any ship having a large concentrated mass. (Author)
