Abstract : The results are reported of a series of tests made to determine the buckling behavior of circular cylinders and conical shells under repeated axial compression. It is shown that if the only restriction placed on buckle depth is that buckle development is such that no permanent gross strain results after load removal, then the buckle load progressively falls with repeated application until a constant lower bound is reached. This effect is considered to be due to the formation of plastic hinges along the edges of the buckles. (Author)
