Abstract : The Isthmus of Panama has numerous rainfall recording stations; however, they are unevenly distributed with most of them being located close to the Canal Zone. Thismakes it impoossible to determine accurately the distribution of rainfall in regions outside the Canal Zone. A climatological study of radar echo occurrence can supplement the rain gauge observations and aid in determining the rainfall distribution. Radar data obtained from Albrook Air Force Base, Canal Zne, were analyzed for April, 1961; July, 1961; and January, 1962. Monthly radar echo occurrence charts were drawn. From the analysis of these charts, areas of potentia3ly hi.h and low rainfall were determined. It was resolved from cross sections of radar echo occurrence and topography that no one meteorological process can explain the cloud formations in the Panama area. (Author)
