Abstract : The factors affecting the production of a nuclear fuel material consisting of a fine, uniform dispersion of uranium monocarbide in a uranium metal matrix were determined. Theoretical considerations indicated that a uniform dispersion of small, hard particles in uranium fuels would eliminate the swelling associated with release of fission gas products during irradiation that severely limits the usefulness of uranium fuel elements. Uranium monocarbide was selected for the dispersed phase because of its excellent combination of physical and nuclear properties.
