Abstract : Ground-support aircraft are dispatched at present according to a deterministic schedule. An investigation is made of a possible stochastic alternative to this, in which the aircraft are dispatched according to an appropriately selected Poisson distribution. The tactical constraint imposed in both cases is that aircraft are to be made available on call if none are on station or en route. An efficiency is defined which measures the relative economy of aircraft required by the two scheduling doctrines. A criterion is suggested, in terms of this efficiency, for indicating when each of the two doctrines should be employed. It is found that under all conditions of practical interest, the deterministic doctrine now in use is superior to the propos d alternative. (Author)
