Abstract : In the absence of wind the three principal factors which cause the deflection dispersion or scatter of the impacts of spinner rockets on a target are initial cross-spin, linear thrust misalignment, and dynamic unbalance. The effect of launcher length on the dispersion of a group of spinner rockets depends on the magnitudes of these factors. Initial cross spin can be measured photographically. Linear thrust misalignment and dynamic unbalance due to manufacturing tolerances on the metal parts of rockets can be measured; however it was found experimentally that the measurement of the latter was not satisfactory for theoretically predicting the dispersion of a typical type of spinner rocket, a M33 rocket, fired from launchers having various lengths. A theoretical analysis of the possible motion of the propellant while the M33 rocket is in flight indicated that the dynamic unbalance due to the propellant could be many times greater than the dynamic unbalance of the metal parts of the rocket. The results of the analysis were verified by a dispersion experiment in which the movement of the propellant was restrained. The results of this experiment indicated that the dynamic unbalance of the M33 rocket due to loose propellant is the major contributor to the dispersion of the M33 rocket. (Author)
